Emily Blunt Apologizes for Insensitive Comments During 2012 Interview With Jonathan Ross

Emily Blunt is finding herself in hot water after a video resurfaced from 11 years ago of her making some rather insensitive comments during an appearance on the Jonathan Ross Show. The interview took place on September 22, 2012 – one week before the release of Looper (a film she was starring in at the time).

While filming for the movie, Blunt and some of her castmates went to a local Chili’s restaurant for dinner. As she was telling the story, Jonathan Ross quickly chimed in and expressed his love for Chili’s – to which Emily agreed. Things took a rather insensitive turn when Ross cracked a joke about Americans.

“If you go to Chili’s you can see why so many of our American friends are enormous,” he said – referring to the large servings Chili’s offers. “Well the girl who was serving me was enormous,” Emily responded. Of course, this is the comment that has everyone up in arms now that the 2012 interview has resurfaced.

On Friday (October 20), Emily Blunt shared an exclusive statement with PEOPLE magazine in response to the criticism she has received in light of the video. She was extremely apologetic for the comments she made and expressed how ‘appalled’ she was when she watched the clip of herself from 11 years ago.

“I just need to address this head on as my jaw was on the floor watching this clip from 12-years ago. I’m appalled that I would say something so insensitive, hurtful, and unrelated to whatever story I was trying to tell on a talk show,” she said – adding that she was ‘absolutely old enough to know better’ at the time.

She goes on to say that she has ‘always considered myself someone who wouldn’t dream of upsetting anyone so whatever possessed me to say anything like this in that moment is unrecognizable to me or anything I stand for.’ She understands that it happened and is ‘sorry for any hurt caused’ as a result of it.

Emily Blunt was 29 years old in the clip and had already been married to John Krasinski for two years – they got engaged in August 2009 and got married on July 10, 2010 in Como, Italy. Of course, they hadn’t yet welcomed either of their two daughters – Hazel was born in 2014 and Violet was born two years later.

Emily Blunt Starring in New Film With Dwayne Johnson

The interview resurfacing comes at a time when Emily Blunt is rumored to be starring in a new film with her former co-star, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. They teamed up together in Jungle Cruise two years ago, but now they appear set to produce and star in Kate Warne – one of Amazon’s upcoming films.

For those who don’t know, Kate Warne is credited as being the first female detective in the US when she worked for the Pinkerton National Detective Agency in the mid-1800s. She was a real-life Sherlock Holmes who helped uncover the Baltimore Plot against President-elect Abraham Lincoln in 1861.

While it hasn’t been confirmed yet, sources are positive that Emily Blunt will be cast as Kate Warne and she’ll be teamed up with Dwayne Johnson. The film is being directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (the same director behind Johnson’s Black Adam) and is being written by Melissa Stack (known for Godmothered).
