Americans Have Mixed Feelings After Icon Raps the National Anthem at Soccer Game

During one of Inter Miami’s latest games, an artist took center stage before the match to perform the national anthem.

However, fans in the stands were met with shock and awe when the performer went on to not sing The Star Spangled Banner, but rather put her own spin on it by rapping the national anthem.

This is far from the first time a performer has taken some artistic liberties while performing the national anthem, but some are saying it’s the first time they’ve ever heard it rapped. And the reviews were mixed.

Sports Illustrated shared a video of the poignant moment on Instagram, take a moment to watch and listen for yourself:

So what do you think? Did you enjoy the freshness of hearing The Star Spangled Banner rapped? Or do you prefer to hear it the old-fashioned way?

While it hasn’t been confirmed, one commenter said he believed the rapper was Hip-hop pioneer Roxanne Shanté. As NBC reports, Shanté currently runs a nonprofit organization called Mind Over Matter which supports young girls at risk of not graduating, including those in foster care.

“I think it’s Roxanne Shante. Tbh, I don’t see the issue LOL. All the ‘freedom lovers.’ Are all upset cuz it wasn’t some guy with a guitar holding a beer,” the commenter wrote.

While Fat Joe agreed, commenting with a series of fire emojis. However, not everyone felt this way with one commenter adding, “The anthem is supposed to be sung exactly how it was written. Putting too much on it is taking away from the actual song and putting a spotlight on yourself which is not what the anthem is supposed to be about.”

So who do you agree with?
