A frat member from the University of Delaware has been arrested and charged after he allegedly beat a female acquaintance. According to WPVI, 20-year-old Brandon Freyre and the victim, who has not been publicly identified, at first got into a verbal argument.
What the argument was about is unclear. Sadly, it then escalated into what is now being described as domestic violence.
As WPVI reported, the attack happened around 4 a.m. on October 9. According to Newark Police, as the argument began, Freyre first started destroying the victim’s personal property, he then started striking the woman with blunt objects.
Reports suggest the attack last for four hours and that Freyre even sprayed spray paint directly into the victim’s eyes. He then threatened to kill her if she were ever to report him to the authorities.
Police reported that Freyre blocked the woman from leaving the apartment, “strangled her to unconsciousness,” and then threw her down the stairs. Thankfully, the victim was able to escape and find help.
The woman has been treated for her injuries and she is expected to recover. Now Freyre, who is from Maryland, is charged with second-degree kidnapping, second-degree assault, strangulation, terroristic threatening, third-degree assault, and criminal mischief.
He is currently being held at Howard R. Young Correctional Institution with a bail set at $38,100. In a statement issued by the University of Delaware, they called for their community to unite against domestic violence.
"The past few days have been difficult for the University of Delaware community. We are writing to acknowledge the harm inflicted, denounce the violence reported, and call for our community to come together and advance our goals of a campus climate free of all violence, including gender-based violence and violence against women.”
Additionally, Freyre was a member of the Kappa Delta Rho fraternity. The University revealed that the organization immediately revoked his membership.
"At this point, we do not have information that connects the fraternity with this specific incident. This recent, heinous incident of domestic violence reminds everyone in our community that we must be vigilant to uphold our values so that all can be safe here and pursue an education without the unjust burden of intimidation or threat to one's physical and emotional wellbeing and safety."
Protests have already begun and they are expected to continue. Some videos from those marches have been shared on TikTok.
