John Legend Dedicates Billboard Performance to Wife Chrissy Teigen After Heartbreaking Pregnancy Loss

On Wednesday, the stars of the music world stepped out of their homes and on to the stage—most for the first time since quarantine began—and shared their talents with the world during the Billboard Music Awards. From Billie Ellish to John Legend, the biggest stars were in attendance.

And the world was especially touched by Legend’s performance which he dedicated to his wife, Chrissy Teigen. As Mamas Uncut previously reported, Teigen and Legend sadly lost their child at roughly 21-weeks gestation last month.

While several black and white photos from the moment they learned their unborn baby boy had passed away, as well as photos from meeting him for the first time, Teigen wrote that they “are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before.”

Prior to losing their baby boy, who they intended on naming Jack, Teigen had a difficult pregnancy. While she felt good and Jack was showing signs that he was thriving, doctors noted that Teigen's placenta was weak—something she had dealt with her first two pregnancies as well.

As a result, Teigen had bled through most of her pregnancy. “We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn’t enough,” she said in her statement.

“We never decide on our babies’ names until the last possible moment after they’re born, just before we leave the hospital. But we, for some reason, had started to call this little guy in my belly, Jack. So he will always be Jack to us. Jack worked so hard to be a part of our little family, and he will be, forever.”

And although Teigen has taken a break from social media after posting her statement, her husband has refrained from making a statement regarding his son's passing, until now. After taking the Billboard Awards stage, Legend said, "This is for Chrissy," before playing his song Never Break.

His The Voice colleague, Kelly Clarkson, praised the singer, father, and husband for the "warm way" he and Teigen invite their fans "into their world — the highs and the lows."

Hours after his emotional performance, John Legend shared a replay of it on Instagram along with words for his wife and about the song he chose to perform. "This is for Chrissy," Legend said again on Instagram. "I love and cherish you and our family so much. We’ve experienced the highest highs and lowest lows together. Watching you carry our children has been so moving and humbling."

This is for Chrissy. I love and cherish you and our family so much. We’ve experienced the highest highs and lowest lows together. Watching you carry our children has been so moving and humbling. I’m in awe of the strength you’ve shown through the most challenging moments. What an awesome gift it is to be able to bring life into the world. We’ve experienced the miracle, the power and joy of this gift, and now we’ve deeply felt its inherent fragility. I wrote this song because I have faith that as long as we walk this earth, we will hold each other’s hands through every tear, through every up and down, through every test. We promised each other this on our wedding day seven years ago, and every challenge we’ve faced has made that promise more powerful, more resilient. Our love will remain. We will never break. Thank you to everyone who has been sending us prayers and well wishes, flowers, cards, words of comfort and empathy. We feel and appreciate your love and support more than you know. More than anything, we’ve heard so many stories about how so many other families have experienced this pain, often suffering in silence. It’s a club no one wants to be a part of, but it’s comforting to know we’re not alone. I’m sure Chrissy will have much more to say about this when she’s ready. But just know we’re grateful and we’re sending love to all of you and your families.

Legend went on to say how strong Teigen has been through this heartbreak time. "I’m in awe of the strength you’ve shown through the most challenging moments. What an awesome gift it is to be able to bring life into the world. We’ve experienced the miracle, the power and joy of this gift, and now we’ve deeply felt its inherent fragility," Legend wrote.

Legend concluded his statement by thanking "everyone who has been sending us prayers and well wishes, flowers, cards, words of comfort, and empathy." He said those acts have made them feel more "love and support" than they'll ever know.
